Do you want to gain new skills, meet new people and use your free time to do something that will make the world a better place?

By joining the Youth STEM Matters team, you can do just that! We’ve got a variety of roles available (designed for 14-22 year olds) and we’ll provide all of the training and support you need - all we ask is that you’re enthusiastic to learn and are passionate about our mission!

With this being our second round of applications, there’s also currently plenty of opportunities for progression to leadership roles.

Read on to find out more about how to apply and the roles we currently have available!

Requirement:
Open to Young People (designed for 14-22 year olds) around the world

Roles Currently Available:
  • Reviewer (x5)
    • Reviewers are responsible for critically evaluating and reviewing articles submitted. Reviewers are expected to comment on the quality, accuracy and structure of a paper, providing guidance to the author as to how to improve.
    • We are specifically seeking applicants who have one or more of physics, maths, engineering, computer science, or design as their primary area of interest.
    • Approximate time commitment: 3-4 hours per week
    • Application deadline: 17:00 (BST) 10th June 2020
  • Editor - Physical Sciences (x1)
    • Editors are responsible for coordinating the peer review and making decisions on papers that are submitted to Youth STEM Matters, based on the comments given by reviewers. They lead small groups of reviewers, and will be involved in mentoring and giving feedback to reviewers.
    • They should have all the skills required of a reviewer, and previous experience in a relevant area (for example, doing STEM based projects, working for a scientific journal, scientific writing, leadership in any context) is desirable. [NB: You don’t need to be experienced in all these areas - if you’ve got experience in one of them, or a related area, we encourage you to apply!]
    • Approximate time commitment: 4-5 hours per week
    • Application deadline: 17:00 (BST) 10th June 2020
  • Managing Editor - Physical Sciences (x1)
    • The Managing Editor (Physical Sciences) is one of the most senior roles within Youth STEM Matters, and has direct responsibility for the success of the Physical Sciences department (physics, maths, engineering, technology, design, earth science, etc.) of the Research Team. They will also be involved in developing resources that can be used by the Youth STEM Matters Team, and also by authors.
    • The successful candidate will have previous experience in leading a team (it doesn’t have to be STEM related!) and also have experience in a relevant area (such as doing STEM based projects, working for a scientific journal, scientific writing). [NB: You don’t need to be experienced in all these areas - if you’ve got experience in one of them, we encourage you to apply!]
    • Approximate time commitment: 5-6 hours per week
    • Application deadline: 17:00 (BST) 10th June 2020
  • Artist (x4)
    • We’re looking for young people who are good at art to join our team! Artists will create original artwork to accompany the articles that we publish, and have a key role in the communication of STEM and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We welcome all mediums of art, and no specific experience of science based art is required.
    • Applicants will be asked to provide copies (photos or scans) of recent original artwork that they have done, after their application has been submitted.
    • Approximate time commitment: 3-4 hours per week
    • Application deadline: 17:00 (BST) 10th June 2020
  • Typesetter (x3)
    • Typesetters play a key role in the presentation of published Original Research and Review Articles. No experience is required for this role, but a familiarity with using a word processor (e.g. Microsoft Word, Google Docs) is useful. For this role, we’re looking for people who are reliable team players, have a good attention to detail and an eye for design.
    • Approximate time commitment: 2-3 hours per week
    • Application deadline: 17:00 (BST) 10th June 2020

How to Apply:
