The 2026 MEXT Scholarship for
International Students offers
support across diverse fields such as science, engineering, social sciences,
and the humanities. Beyond academic excellence, the program emphasizes the
development of intercultural understanding and the strengthening of
international relationships between Japan and scholars' home countries.
Participants will benefit not only from a top-tier education but also from
immersive experiences in Japan’s vibrant culture, advanced technologies, and
safe environment. To ease their transition, students are also encouraged to
take preparatory Japanese language courses before starting their academic
programs.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Status: Currently
in university or Japanese language prep course.
- Prep
Course: Must pass entrance exam after preparatory education.
- No
Transfers: Changing course or university is not allowed.
- Compulsory
Subjects: Must take required subjects, even if already studied.
- Nationality: Must
be from a country with diplomatic ties to Japan; Japanese nationals not
eligible.
- Age: Born
on or after April 2, 2001.
- Education: Minimum
of 12 years of education outside Japan / equivalent to high school /
passed an academic equivalency exam.
- Language: Willing
to learn and study in Japanese.
- Health: Must
submit official MEXT health certificate.
- Arrival: Must
arrive in Japan between April 1–7, 2026.
- Visa: Must
obtain a new “Student” visa; no entry without it.

- Medical Certificate:
· On official MEXT form, signed by
licensed physician.
